Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before your first massage. If you can't find the answer here, don't hesitate to get in touch.
Massage therapy is a hands-on treatment that involves manipulating the soft tissues of the body — muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue — to relieve tension, reduce pain, and promote relaxation. It has been practised for thousands of years and is now widely recognised as an effective complement to conventional healthcare. Whether you're dealing with chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or simply need time to unwind, massage therapy can be tailored to your individual needs and goals.
Massage should never be unbearably painful. Some deeper techniques — particularly during deep tissue or sports massage — may cause mild discomfort as tight muscles and knots are worked through, but this is a productive discomfort that quickly eases. I always check in with you throughout the session and adjust the pressure to suit your comfort level. If anything feels too much at any point, just let me know and I'll adapt the treatment straight away. Your comfort and safety are always my top priority.
This depends entirely on your individual needs and what you'd like to achieve. Many clients feel a significant improvement after just one session, particularly for general relaxation and stress relief. For chronic pain, recurring tension, or specific injuries, a course of regular treatments — typically every one to two weeks — tends to produce the best results. For ongoing maintenance and wellbeing, monthly sessions work well for most people. We'll discuss a treatment plan that suits your needs and budget during your consultation.
Wear whatever is comfortable for you to travel in — there's no special dress code. During the massage, you'll undress to your level of comfort and be covered with fresh towels throughout. Only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time, and I'll always step out of the room to give you privacy while you get settled on the table. Many clients undress to their underwear, but you're welcome to keep on as much clothing as you feel comfortable with. The most important thing is that you feel relaxed and at ease.
Yes, I offer pregnancy massage for clients who are past their first trimester (from 13 weeks onwards). Pregnancy massage uses specially adapted techniques and positioning to keep you comfortable and safe throughout. It can help with common pregnancy-related discomfort such as lower back pain, swollen ankles, hip tension, and difficulty sleeping. Please let me know about your pregnancy when booking so I can prepare the treatment room with the right support cushions and plan the session accordingly. If you have any complications or concerns, I may recommend checking with your midwife or GP first.
Your first visit begins with a short consultation — around 10 to 15 minutes — where I'll ask about your medical history, lifestyle, areas of tension or pain, and what you'd like to achieve from the treatment. This helps me tailor the session specifically to your needs. After that, I'll leave the room while you get comfortable on the treatment table. The massage then begins, and I'll check in with you throughout to make sure the pressure and technique feel right. Afterwards, I'll offer personalised aftercare advice including stretches and self-care tips to help you get the most from your treatment.
Massage therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions including chronic back and neck pain, tension headaches, sports injuries, sciatica, repetitive strain injuries, fibromyalgia, anxiety, and stress-related tension. While I can't diagnose or treat medical conditions, many clients find that regular massage significantly reduces their symptoms and improves their quality of life. If you're unsure whether massage is suitable for your particular situation, I'm happy to have a chat about it — just get in touch and we can discuss your needs before you commit to anything.
