Frequently Asked Questions
If your question isn't answered here, please don't hesitate to get in touch. There's no such thing as a silly question.
Every person is different, so there's no single answer. For focused, goal-oriented work such as managing anxiety or navigating a specific life event, 6–12 sessions is typical. Deeper therapeutic work — exploring long-standing patterns, processing trauma, or strengthening a relationship — often benefits from a longer commitment. We'll regularly review your progress together and adjust the plan as needed.
The first session is an initial assessment where we get to know each other. I'll ask about your background, what's brought you to therapy, and what you're hoping to achieve. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with. Together we'll agree on the best therapeutic approach and map out a plan that feels right for you.
Absolutely. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of my practice and essential for building the trust that effective therapy requires. The only exceptions are the standard limitations that apply to all therapists — where there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or where disclosure is required by law. I'll explain these boundaries fully before we begin working together.
Yes. I understand that fitting therapy around work and family commitments can be challenging. I offer select evening appointments during the week and Saturday morning sessions. These slots are popular, so I recommend booking early to secure your preferred time.
I ask for at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Sessions cancelled with less notice or missed without contact will be charged at the full session rate. I understand that genuine emergencies happen, and I'll always try to be flexible and compassionate in those circumstances.
I'm a BACP registered therapist, and some private health insurance providers do cover psychotherapy sessions. I'd recommend checking with your insurer and mentioning my name and BACP registration details when enquiring about coverage. I can provide receipts and any documentation needed to support your claim.
Yes. I offer secure, GDPR-compliant video sessions for clients who prefer the flexibility of working from home or who live outside the Harrogate area. Research consistently shows that online therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions for most concerns. All you need is a private space, a stable internet connection, and a willingness to engage.
I take an integrative approach, which means I draw on several evidence-based modalities and tailor the therapy to suit you. This includes cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for managing unhelpful thought patterns, person-centred therapy for building self-awareness and confidence, EMDR for processing trauma, and emotionally focused therapy for couples work. We'll find the approach that fits your needs best.
