Hello, I'm James
I'm a BACP accredited counsellor with over ten years' experience helping people work through anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and workplace stress. I'm trained in person-centred and cognitive behavioural (CBT) approaches, which means I can adapt the way I work to suit you and what you're going through.
Before retraining as a counsellor, I spent several years in the corporate world. That experience gave me a first-hand understanding of the pressures that come with demanding work environments — and ultimately led me to a career where I could make a real difference to people's lives. I'm based in Leeds and offer sessions both in person and online.
Outside of the counselling room, you'll find me running along the canal, watching football, or spending time with my two sons. I believe that being genuine and human is the starting point for any good therapeutic relationship.
How I Got Here
Burnout in a corporate career led me to seek counselling myself — and that experience changed the direction of my life.
After years of long hours and mounting pressure in the corporate sector, I hit a wall. I was exhausted, disconnected, and struggling in ways I didn't fully understand. A colleague suggested counselling, and somewhat reluctantly, I gave it a try. That decision changed everything. For the first time, I had a space where I could be honest about what I was feeling — and I began to see a way forward.
That experience inspired me to retrain. I completed my Diploma in Integrative Counselling and went on to gain experience in both NHS and workplace settings, working with people facing a wide range of challenges. In 2018, I opened my own private practice in Leeds. Every client I sit with reminds me why I made the change — because I know what it's like to need someone in your corner, and how much it matters when you find them.
Qualifications & Training
I am committed to ongoing professional development and hold the following qualifications and memberships.
How We'll Work Together
No two people are the same. Here's what to expect when you work with me.
A Free Initial Chat
We'll have a brief phone call where you can tell me a bit about what's going on and ask any questions. There's no pressure and no obligation — it's simply a chance to see if we're a good fit.
Your First Session
I'll take time to understand your situation, what's brought you to counselling, and what you'd like to get out of it. Together we'll agree on a way of working that feels right for you.
Ongoing Sessions
Regular weekly sessions where we dig into what matters most. I'll draw on person-centred and CBT techniques depending on what's most helpful, and we'll adjust the approach as things progress.
Review & Moving On
We'll regularly check in on how things are going. When you feel ready, we'll plan an ending together so you leave with the tools and confidence to move forward on your own terms.
The Principles That Guide My Work
These values are at the heart of everything I do.
Honesty
I'm straight with you. Counselling works best when there's no pretence on either side. I won't tell you what you want to hear — I'll help you see things clearly so you can make real changes.
Safety & Respect
You need to feel safe before you can open up. I work hard to create that space — somewhere you can say what's really on your mind without judgement. Everything shared stays between us.
Accessibility
Counselling should be within reach for everyone who needs it. I offer flexible scheduling, online sessions, and a straightforward approach that cuts through the jargon. No waiting lists, no barriers.
I'd been putting off getting help for months, but James made it easy from the very first call. He's direct without being pushy, and the sessions gave me practical tools I actually use every day. I feel like a different person at work now.
